Nikon D60 rant

Nikon has announced the release of the D60. A model designed to fit in between the D40 and D80.

Reading some of the features of the camera I have a few problems with the feature creep that seems to be afflicting new digital cameras.

One major gripe I have with both Nikon and Canon is their recent habit of flooding the entry level DSLR market with loads of different cameras that are all pretty much the same thing.

The main examples of this are the Canon 300D, 350D, 400D and 450D and Nikon’s D40 and D40x. I can see the point from a business point of view, but it annoys me that they basically keep back features from new cameras and tell us they are the state of the art only to release another camera a few months later for more money with these extra features and tag on an ‘x’ after the model number.

The main reason for this post however is not my hatred of the constant drip releasing of new cameras, it is the inclusion of photo editing features on the camera.

I really don’t understand why they feel the need to spend so much time developing cut down photo editing applications and then squeeze them into their cameras. The vast majority of people who own a DSLR will have some form of editing application on their computer and most of the cameras come with a free version of Adobe Elements or Photoshop so why are the features needed on the camera?

OK, its a rhetorical question, I know why they are included, but are they needed? I doubt it.
